In controlled environment agriculture, temperature management plays a critical role in maintaining suitable growing conditions and ensuring efficient greenhouse operation. In regions experiencing high summer temperatures and intense solar radiation, evaporative cooling systems are widely used to reduce greenhouse temperatures. Among the available solutions, cellulose evaporative cooling pads are commonly used in various greenhouse applications due to their simple design, reliable performance, and wide range of applications.
Cellulose cooling pads are typically manufactured from specially treated cellulose paper. Their unique corrugated structure increases the contact surface area between the incoming air and the wetted pad media. When recirculating water is evenly distributed over the pad surface, hot outdoor air passes through the saturated cooling pads. As a portion of the water evaporates, it absorbs heat from the air, reducing the temperature of the incoming air before it enters the greenhouse.
In practical greenhouse applications, cooling pads are typically combined with exhaust fans to form a negative-pressure evaporative cooling system, commonly known as a fan-and-pad cooling system. Outdoor air is drawn through the wetted cooling pads, where it is cooled before entering the greenhouse. The exhaust fans then remove warm, humid air from the opposite side of the greenhouse, helping to improve the indoor thermal environment. This system is suitable for glass greenhouses, film greenhouses, and propagation greenhouses. Equipment selection and system configuration should be determined according to greenhouse span, length, crop requirements, and the required ventilation rate.
Cooling performance depends on more than the cooling pads themselves. Key factors include outdoor relative humidity, airflow rate, cooling pad thickness, water distribution uniformity, and overall system operating conditions. Since evaporative cooling increases indoor humidity and consumes water, the system must be designed with careful consideration of local climatic conditions, crop-specific temperature and humidity requirements, and available water resources.
To maintain optimal system performance, regular inspection and maintenance are essential. Circulation pumps, water distribution pipes, water collection tanks, and cooling pad surfaces should be checked periodically. Scale, sediment, and other impurities should be removed when necessary. Maintenance procedures should also be adjusted according to local water quality to prevent uneven water distribution, clogging, or cooling pad deterioration from reducing system efficiency.
An efficient greenhouse cooling solution requires the coordinated design of cooling pads, exhaust fans, water circulation systems, and the greenhouse structure itself. We supply a comprehensive range of greenhouse products and integrated systems, including Glass Greenhouse systems, Film Greenhouse systems, fan-and-pad evaporative cooling systems, aluminum glazing systems, shading systems, and greenhouse drive and transmission systems. We also provide technical support tailored to individual project requirements, helping customers develop greenhouse solutions suited to their specific growing conditions and production needs.
